Pipers in Kilts

Pleated to the Line

A pipe band marches off after their performance. Look closely at the kilts. You cannot see the pattern of the tartan. You can only see repeating lines. There are two ways to pleat a kilt: 1) Pleated to the tartan (so you see the pattern) or 2) Pleated to the line (you see 'lines'). Most Military style kilts are Pleated to the Line. Most ladies kilt-skirts are pleated to the tartan. Both styles are appropriate for men to wear. The kilts which are "pleated to the line" are usually heavier kilts. Marty prefers "pleated to the line" because of the way they look, and also the heavier kilt has a more manly swing to it.
