Gentleman and lady exchange ball cards to arrange for a dance

Victorian-Era Ball

Marty participated in a "Victorian Scottish Ball" in Ann Arbor. The "Victorian" refers to Queen Victoria of Great Britain, a period of time from 1837 - 1901. At this ball we dressed in traditional Scottish formal clothes and danced formal dances from this era. In this photo a lady and a gentleman have exchanged "ball cards" (look in their hands) and will write their names in for a particular dance. Most of the dancers have their partners arranged in this manner before the music starts. This is considered "more dignified" than running around the floor to find a partner just before the dance. (However Marty took photos instead of signing ball cards, so he had to rush to find a partner for most dances!)
